The obelisk is a monument to the memory of King D. José, defining the central point of the Marquês de Pombal Square, a perfect square, limited by 4 turrets at each corner.

The square is the heart of the city, on a blueprint from the Main Court Architect, Captain Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos.

On the monument’s pedestal states 1755 but, only on the 13th May 1776, was made public, as an initiative from the fishing commerce on the symbolic opening of Vila Real de Santo António.
